Taken in its entirety, the world of design typically follows a pattern of market desire and market satisfaction. Trends and developments within the worlds of graphic design, fashion and consumer technology, to name a few, are largely governed by the whims of a commercialized world. Speculative design is a branch of design that focues on the possibilites of the future. It does not aim to be practical, but rather to organize, focus, and above all else, to question the development of the modern world. Speculative design gains its substance from ideas and “what-if” scenarios, and uses these to provoke and stimulate thinking and discussion around the issue of a world spiraling in uncertain directions.
